Walt “Smokey” Fricke - Wing #3 and Alternate Formation Lead #1
Walt soloed on his 16th birthday and has been collecting and flying vintage and warbird aircraft all his adult life . (including a Great Lakes, Waco, Staggerwing and a Grumman Widgeon). Walt is also a combat seasoned aviator, having flown hundreds of combat missions as an Army helicopter pilot with the 68th Assault Helicopter Company in Vietnam. He received the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, 21 air medals and a Purple Heart. When not flying his T-28, Walt is busy as the founder and AirBoss of the Veterans Airlift Command, which provides air transportation to wounded warriors and their families with a national network of Volunteer aircraft owners and pilots.
